Election R&D Dialogues: Democratic National Convention 2020 Recap

Organizer: USC Dornsife Center for the Political Future

The Democratic National Committee is moving forward with its convention either virtually or with limited in-person attendance Aug. 17-20. Bob Shrum and Mike Murphy, co-directors of the Center for the Political Future, will recap the week's highlights, forecast their November predictions, and welcome your questions.

Organizers chose Milwaukee, a first for the city, because of its legacy as a union town in one of the most critical battleground states. Historically the convention has been a four-day spectacle, culminating with the candidate's address as the grand finale. This year will look drastically different due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Roughly 4,000 delegates from all 50 states and territories participate to vote on nominees for president and vice president, the party platform, and other procedural motions. The convention will be Biden's first public appearance outside of his Delaware home since the final Democratic presidential primary debate in March.
