Virtual Discussion With Nebraska State Sen. Adam Morefeld & State Democratic Party Chairwoman Jane Kleeb

Organizer:Open Primaries

What's going on in Nebraska? It's a bright red state; 70 percent of its state representatives are registered members of the Republican Party. But Democratic legislators chair multiple committees and diverse & politically incorrect coalitions of legislators have come together to abolish the death penalty, raise the gas tax and issue driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants — each with majorities sufficient to override a Republican governor's veto. Such informal coalitions are not happenstance but the product of design, and a political culture more than 80 years in the making.

Join us to hear from Nebraska state Sen. Adam Morfeld and Nebraska Democratic Party Chairwoman Jane Kleeb as they talk about Nebraska's unicameral, nonpartisan Legislature and top two open primary, how it creates incentives for candidates to reach out to all constituents, understand their concerns and cooperate with colleagues without having to toe the party line.

They'll also talk about renewed interest in expanding top two in Nebraska to include federal and statewide offices and why the state Democratic party has voluntarily opened their primaries to independent voters and is calling on the national party to do the same.
