A diverse young generation is ready to change our politics and culture, but our congressional leadership and presidential options remain geriatric. It's not just the normal politics of aging: the baby boomer generation has maintained extraordinary power and influence throughout its life course.

"The Science of Politics" podcast welcomes guest Kevin Munger who finds that generational conflict is inevitable as the baby boomers retire but maintain their political influence against much more diverse, less religious, and more liberal rising generations. The institutions boomers built are losing credibility, but we should not expect their power to wane.

President’s Use of Force in the Caribbean Is Another Test for Congress and the Constitutional System

Since president Trump returned to office, Congress has seemed either irrelevant or impotent. Republican majorities in the Senate and the House have acquiesced in the president’s desire to radically expand executive power.

Examples are legion. The Congress sat idly by while the administration dismantled agencies that the Congress created. It sat idly by while the administration refused to spend money it had appropriated. Congress didn’t do a thing when the president ignored laws it passed.

You can’t hide from war crimes by calling them ‘fake news’

Since September of this year, the United States military has been blowing up boats allegedly trafficking drugs in the Caribbean.

Whether these attacks are legal is hotly debated. Congress hasn’t declared war or even authorized the use of force against “narco-terrorists” or against Venezuela, the apparent real target of a massive U.S. military build-up off its coast.
