Citizens United v. FEC was a 2010 Supreme Court case that resulted in corporations, nonprofit organizations and labor unions being permitted to make unlimited independent expenditures in support or against political candidates. The justices ruled, 5-4, that the First Amendment's protection of free speech prohibits the government from restricting such spending.
